Jr. Commodore Cup

In years past, Junior sailors were elected as Junior Commodore officers, with the guidance of the Program Director, to run cookouts and special events for the Junior Sailing program. It was an honor to be elected and added such spirit and  participation in sailing/social events. My hope is that we can reinstate this tradition again this summer and the pier will be a gathering place for friends like the beach club, tennis club and golf club.

The Sailing Program holds the Junior Commodore Cup and 420 Challenge Cup every summer. The Cup is an intra-club event for HPYC sailors only. Competition is held on Wednesday afternoon for Opti racers, 420 racers, and Sunfish racers.

THE OPTI DIVISION: JR. COMMODORE CUP

The Opti division of the Junior Commodore Cup is a great way to get involved in Opti racing. HPYC instructors coach participants in an encouraging environment. The race is divided into two classes with the Red Fleet for more experienced Opti sailors and Green Fleet for new racers. Awards are given in each class for July series, August series and Combined Season top finishers. The ultimate prize is the John Linehan Challenge Cup for the summer's overall winner. In addition, the Junior Commodore Cup is awarded to the sailor that shows the greatest spirit and enthusiasm in the series.

Following the racing each Wednesday, sailors gather on the club deck for soft drinks and snacks. Parents are encouraged to sign up for sponsoring the refreshments.

THE 420 DIVISION: THE 420 CHALLENGE CUP

All sailors in the 420 classes participate in the 420 division. Sailors ultimately compete for The Gallagher & O'Neill Trophy which recognizes the top Crew and Skipper for the Overall Summer Series (6 races total). Races take place on the FIRST THREE Wednesdays of each session. Coaches provide instruction and it is great training for the team and fleet racing that our 420 sailors engage in.

THE SUNFISH DIVISION:

Introduction of racing Sunfish, opportunity to be coached by instructors, with the hopes that the sailors  will gain confidence to race in HPYC Saturday Sunfish races.
