Friends,

Like roses that bloom for just a few weeks a year but make our summer when they do, HPYC Sunfish racing starts again this Saturday. First gun (er, whistle) at 10. Plan is 3 races. Typically, short-course (~20 minutes per race), windward-leeward 2x, or modified Olympic (triangle then W-L, finish to windward, but weather-dependent.) Usually we’re off the water by noon, and off to lunch by 1230 or 1p after cleaning up.

Fiona McCarthy has once again agreed to run RC for us. Thank you, Fiona!

The summer schedule:

July series

July 5 — Independence Day regatta. (Counts toward July and season, but additional separate prizes. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place handmade, handpainted mugs from our fleet potter Andrew Jones in Yarmouth, are at stake.)

July 12 — 10a gun

July 19 — lay weekend; Sunfish Regional #2 at WLYC.

June 26 — 10a gun

August 3 — 10a gun

August series

August 10 — 10a gun

August 17 — 10a gun

August 24 — 10a gun

August 31 — Anderson Trophy. (Counts toward August and season, but separate trophy.)

If you don’t have a boat, you can request a boat here: http://bit.ly/hpycsunsign .

You must wear a life jacket to race.

We follow the Rules of Sailing, 2025-2028 edition, and International Sunfish Class Association rules:

Please let us know if you plan to race. We would like at least 5 boats. If the weather is iffy, we’ll make a call around 8a to those who have raised their hands, to decide whether to go.

If you’re new to this, don’t be nervous! Come early, like 8:15 or 8:30, and we’ll help you rig, maybe trade some tips. We may look competitive, but we pride ourselves on being welcoming, friendly, and low-key, and we help each other to learn and improve. If you think you might like sailing, racing is how you get better, but it’s important to have fun, and that’s what our fleet is all about.

Please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions. Hope to see you!
